INTRODUCTION

Information services have become an essential infrastructural facility for supporting health care delivery systems as well as for catering to the growing demands of the health sector. To meet the challenging needs of information and documentation, it is imperative that the existing resources and services for health sciences are reviewed from time to time. Such an assessment should lead to the identification of the various constraints that impede their development and indicate possible solutions.

Today people want quick and correct information on current issues. Like in other areas, in the field of Health and Medical Science too, the availability of scientific and technical information and knowledge has an important role in upgrading Research and Development activities.

At Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), the Library and Information Centre of the Council extends support to Research Scholars, Scientists, Medical and Health experts etc. through the monthly Medical News Index Service. News items appeared in various national dailies are collected, abstracted, indexed and classified subject-wise alphabetically, with a view to benefiting of medical fraternity as well as researchers.

This medical news index service is a welcome addition to the activities of the centre and should substantially contribute to the advancement of medical and scientific knowledge.

About the Medical News Index

‘Medical News Index’ a specialized monthly Information Dissemination Service was started in 1980. Now the, January 2013 issue of the same is in your hands. It is arranged subject wise in alphabetical order under certain subjects sub-headings are again arranged chronologically. Each entry contains i) title of the news in bold italics, under each title brief summary of the news is given followed by the name of the news paper in abbreviated form, print line and page no. of the news paper. Sub-index is included in contents portion. If required full text of the news item can be had on request from the Library & Information Centre. Hope, this will serve as a useful reference tool in knowing the latest in the field of Medical and allied sciences.
