Library and Information Center

Introduction

The Library & Information Centre, as a special research library was established by the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (GOVT. OF INDIA), New Delhi in 1978 to collect, store and preserve the special type of valuable scattered literature in the Unani System of Medicine. It endeavours to acquire, process, organize and disseminate global information in the field of its specialization among the medical community in general and research staff of the council in particular. Since 1979, it is moving steadily towards achieving its goal.

The catalogue of the Library has been fully computerized and can be accessed through OPAC (On-Line Public Access catalogue). In the field of Library Automation, LIC is using FoxPro software and an automated multi-user package SOUL (Software for University Library) prepared by INFLIBNET (UGC), Ahmadabad as well as working on the LAN (Local Area Networking) system. Urdu software “In-Page” is also being used.

Library is a Global subscriber of WHO (World Health Organization) publications. It has institutional membership of DELNET (Developing Library Network) Medical Library Association of India, British Council Library, and American Library. The users can search our catalogue through Union Catalogue of Books on DELNET site.

Library is actively engaged in the work of preservation of Manuscripts of Unani System of Medicine. Its membership is open to Technical Experts and Research staff of the Council. However, on special request, outside research scholars are also entertained. It  has a rich collection of valuable material in shape of books, thesis, dissertations, back volumes of journals, periodicals, newsletters, WHO monographs, technical and annual reports, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, thesaurus, glossaries, CDs, floppies, charts, maps, microfilms, audio/video cassettes etc. on Traditional, Alternative, Indian, Herbal,  Modern Medicines and Allied Sciences etc. It possesses rare original manuscripts, rare books, photocopies, and scanned copies of rare books and manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu in the field of Unani System of Medicine. It has a valuable collection of back volumes of Unani Journals also.
